This can even be done with a magic item the boss has, which would make for a cool piece of loot potentially. You can always increase the boss's Con stat or give them proficiency or something to help out with the saving throw against the stun. Even just adding more ranged enemies can hurt the monk's tactics.Ĥ) Buff up CON. The BBEG should be smart enough at the end of a campaign to know the party's general tactics and will have a way to deal with it. Stunning Strike requires the monk to be in melee range. Even if the monk stuns the boss, it'll be more epic with 2-3 Ki points remaining as opposed to 6-7.ģ) Stay at range. Have the epic fight be at the end of several smaller encounters designed to force the party to burn resources. Have multiple threats present so the party can't easily focus down one guy and just win the combat.Ģ) Deplete the monk's resources. There are a couple of different ways to handle Stunning Strike:ġ) Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. There is basically nothing immune to being stunned, and even legendary resistance would get eaten through by 3-4 monk attacks.
#Stunning strike 5e with unarmed how to#
I don't want to bring my BBEG into a fight with the party because I don't know how to make the fight feel epic without worrying that it'll just end up being cheesed. Does anyone have any good counters to this skill? The only thing that is effective is large groups of enemies, as Stunning Strike is a solo target ability (not that a monk can't stun 3-4 enemies on one turn still), but for big boss fights, it ends up feeling like the fight is just getting cheesed. Otherwise, even if the boss deals a truckload of damage in it's first turn, it will inevitably be stunned the rest of the fight. It seems like the most powerful skill in the game, and I've found the most tense/epic combats my group has are the rare occasions our monk player can't make the session. It is such an inexpensive, yet powerful ability for the monk class. Combat areas for every conceivable encounter. Collection of Podcasts, Vidcasts, and other D&D Multimedia for your consumption.
